720p or 1080p?
It’s too confusing. I have a 3 year old run of the mill Samsung DVD player, I have satellite (not cable) and an original X-Box. I’m looking at buying a 50″ 720p plasma (Sanyo). The average viewing distance will be 12-16′.
Should I stick with the 720p or get a 42″ 1080p?
Unfortunately, most of the answers here are based on misperceptions and personal preference not reality and facts. Beware.
At 10′-12′ — if you will be watching HDTV (vs normal satellite) you would be better off with a 50″ 720p model (actually you could use a 60″ 720p model at that distance). A 1080p model would have to be larger than 70″ at that viewing distance to provide a visibly superior picture to a 720p model. Anything smaller is a waste of money (i.e. buy 720p).
If you don’t intend to upgrade to HD programming you probably don’t need to upgrade to an HDTV. But if you do you shouldn’t buy larger than 37″ @ 720p for that viewing distance.
The key determinant is whether you a) can see the pixels, and b) what the viewing angle will be.
