How can you calculate the square root of a number by hand?
If a calculator can do it there must be some formula to do it,
The basic steps are:
1. Guess
2. Divide by guess
3. Average
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until satisfied
Example:
√15 =
I know that √16 = 4, so I’m going to try guessing 4 even though I know it has to be less than 4.
Step 1: My guess is 4
Step 2: Divide by guess: 15 / 4 = 3.75
Step 3: Average guess and result of step 2: (4 + 3.75) / 2 = 7.75 / 2 = 3.875
Step 4: Divide by guess: 15 / 3.875 ≈ 3.871
Step 3: Average guess and result of step 4: (3.875 + 3.871) / 2 = 7.746 / 2 = 3.873
If you use a calculator, you can see that √15 = 3.872983346, so we got pretty close.
