How do doctors test for communication deficits?
A lot has to do with how old the person is, their history and baseline for comparison. The doctor may have known the patient for many years, in which case it’s a combination of common sense and screening tests, of which there are many so the one that is applied depends on the diagnosis in question.
There are also some tests that will screen for certain conditions such as strokes that cause communication deficits. Clinical psychiatrists or other specialist healthcare workers, such as speech therapists, would do extended (the former) tests on people with suspected communication deficits. This may involve asking the person to say certain words, talk as the doctor picks up on specific problems or even read something. This poses a particular challenge is the person if the person for whom English is a second language, or has limited education, or is even deaf or has a anatomical deficit.
There’s also child psychiatrists and psychologists who are trained to assess communication issues in the younger members of the population. This involves observation of the child and tests of language and interactions with others.
