How do you measure the battery voltage using a multimeter?
To be more, specific, an analog multimeter.
I want to measure the voltage of some AA batteries, but i am unsure of how to using an analog multimeter.

Its really a tedious task to measure values on an analogue multimeter (AMM) than a digital multimeter (DMM), but frankly speaking, learning to take a reading on an AMM is really good as we use skills and put our brain to use to some extent. But, in a DMM, its a spoon fed one.
Moreover, in an AMM, the reading shown is constant, whereas in a DMM, it continiously varies, unless you’ve one good product.
Well, since you’ve said AA batteries, its voltage rating is usually 1.5VDC. In the AMM, connect the Positive (Red) lead to the positive of the battery and the Negative (Black) lead to the cathode of the battery (The symbols + & – could be seen on the battery). Always start from the maximum range to check current and voltage. (In this case, since you know that it is a AA battery and voltage is usually 1.5V, you may start with the 10V range).
In an AMM, you’ll have multiple ranges on the selection knob and also correspondingly multiple scale readings on the dial. However, two or multiple scale readings can be clubbed together for a single selection range. For Eg., A 0-1000 volts range on the dial can be used to read readings from 0-10, 0-100 and 0-1000 (all full scale readings) corresponding to the selected range on the knob. A precaution should be considered while taking reading on an AMM. In all AMMs, ther is a mirror placed beneath the scale. The readers eye, the pointer and the pointers reflection on the mirror, all of them should fall on the same line in order to obtain accurate measurement and also to avoid parallax error.
In this case, say if the pointer points at 1.5volts, (15 on a 0-100scale, 150 on a 0-1000 scale), then the voltage in the battery is 1.5 Volts DC. And in case the pointer points in between any two marked voltage range, then, take the differene between two successive voltage ranges on the dial and divide the difference obtained by teh no. of divisions marked on teh scael (here, you are checking the least count) and this gives the accurate value of the voltage measured by the multimeter.
Hope this (lengthy) description helps you to check for the voltege of an AA Sized battery by an AMM.
It is always better to start off these with the AMM instead of a DMM that requires no skill of the user. Its like as they say, it is always good to learn typewriting on a typrwriter than on a computer and then switch over to the computer.
NB: All readings obtained on all multimeters should be considered only for notational value and are approximate. The values so obtained should not be used for any research purpose until the meters are calibrated by an authorised agency.
