Question about reversing the direction of motors?
Why is mechanical interlocking used on forward and reversing starter combinations?
What type of interlocking uses a normally closed contact on the starter to lock out the other starter?
Why are indicator lights often used with forward and reversing circuits?
Are ‘normally open’ or ‘normally closed’ contacts used when a limit switch is used to stop a motor that is running in one direction?
When reversing the direction of a three phase motor, are the leads interchanged on the LINE side of the contactors or on the LOAD side of the contactors?
Mechanical interlocking is used to prevent “electrical over ride” of reversing starters to prevent someone from physically pushing reversing coil in.
Normally closed contact being used as “anti-reversing” lock out is “Electrical Interlocking” as opposed to Mechanical Interlocking.
Indicator lights are used to give a heads up as to which direction motor IS turning. Sometimes used in conjunction with a “Motor Not Turning” Light.
Choice of Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) on a limit switch USUALLY depends on whether or not you want a “Fail Safe” condition. If you use the NC contacts on the Limit Switch to stop the motor, if the circuit opens FOR ANY REASON, then the motor stops. This is Fail Safe circuit. If you use the NO contacts and the circuit fails, the motor would continue to run because the circuit would ALWAYS be open. This would NOT be Fail Safe, but still acceptable if you do not need Fail Safe.
The switching of the leads for the three Phase motor should be done on the LOAD side of the contacter.
