Checking Dryer Fuses and Heater element with Ohm meter?
My dryer has stopped getting hot so I took it apart to check all the fuses and the heater element..
I am using a digital Ohm meter set to 200 Ohms and measuring the Thermal Fuse and the Hi limit thermostat gives me a reading of .5 which seems okay I believe…
however checking the heating element gives me a no reading at all… The ohm meter stays at 1 all the time and never changes… I would think the heater element should read 17 Ohms at least correct?
Is it safe to assume it’s the heater element at fault?
You should have one of the connections undone from the element to isolate it from the rest of the system. Once that’s done, and you touch both of the connections your ohmmeter should read all 0000’s. If it doesn’t move the needle or show a reading at all then it’s open or broken. If it has continuity then it works, if no continuity then it won’t heat. It’s not like a water heater or range element, there is no particular resistance that should be shown, as long as it has continuity it’s good. Hi-limit thermostats are the same, if they’re good they show continuity, if they’re open they’re blown.
