What is the ideal screw thread depth for rigid clamping of workpieces using allen head bolts?
I need to clamp an aluminium work piece onto a 4th axis face plate on a CNC VMC. The clamping has to be done on excess material in the workpiece whcih will be machined off at the end. This excess material is just 16mm and the workpiece dimension is about 95mm X 220mm X 110mm (This side has excess of 16mm). Can someone out there suggest to me the ideal allen head screw for this application ? I have forgotten the data regarding ideal depth for a threaded bolt for rigid clamping and and i’ am not able to locate it in my data base 
I will be putting a tapped hole in the workpiece. The only possibility is M8 and i need to know what is the minimum ideal thread depth necessary for M8 to have best gripping torque.
Your question is some what ambiguous.
Is there some kind of base plate that you want to fasten your
work piece to, prior to attaching it to the face plate?
Does the face plate have through holes for mounting the work piece?
Or does it have T slots?
Are you planning to drill and tap the face plate?
Is there 16mm available on all four sides of the work piece?
Best I can do is recommend a set of four 10mm allen head bolts and counter bore them as deep as feasible, if you will be machining over the bolt heads.
Sounds like you may have to build a fixture plate.
If you have a sub base/ aluminum/ 30mm thick, I would run it if it was my project. That thickness/ thread depth would be adequate
