suppose we have 2 circles having the same center. the small one has a radius, and the large one has radius.
lets now consider the 2 shapes, the 1st is the doughnut-like region between the 2 circles. the second is a disk whose diameter is the length of the line segment whose endpoints are on the large circle and whose center point touches the small circle at its north pole. what are the areas of these 2 shaded regions? how do their sizes compare with each other?
A “doughnut-like” shape in the plane is called an annulus. Your description is pretty good, but what is shaded and what is not shaded? Lets say the large circle has radius R and the small circle has radius r. Then the circle whose center is at the “north pole” of the small circle has radius sqrt(R^2 – r^2), by the Pythagorean theorem.
The annulus has area: pi R^2 – pi r^2 = pi (R^2 – r^2)
The circle centered at “north pole” has area: pi (sqrt(R^2-r^2))^2 =
pi (R^2 – r^2).
So the annulus has the same area as the circle centered at the north pole.
